Symbol Creator: An alternative Eye-based Text Entry Technique with Low Demand for Screen Space

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Virtual keyboards used by physically impaired users for text entry usually display all characters simultaneously on the screen. Applications where saving physical space is critical, however, require another approach. A common option is grouping several symbols under one key and employing a hierarchical selection mechanism. We present an alternative technique (Symbol Creator) based on assembling characters using segments that resemble basic elements of Latin cursive. This technique was empirically evaluated along with another technique developed as an eye-gaze analogue to mobile phones’ multi-tap system. In terms of accuracy and entry speed, both techniques performed equally well. Subjectively, however, Symbol Creator was the preferred method, since it was perceived as being more fun to use and less frustrating than the other technique. These findings suggest that designers of text entry systems for disabled users should not stick to menu treebased systems – there are also other solutions to on-screen space saving problem.

SVIFT: Swift Vision- Free Text-entry for Touch Screens

We describe SVIFT – an eyes-free text-entry technique for mobile touch devices to increase speed and accuracy while enabling fast learning and easy adoption. The technique involves expanding the text-entry mode to a full screen format and innovating over the old-style T9 and telephone pad design. It makes use of multiple input and feedback interactions – swipe, pause, circle, hand-waving, audio...

Address Entry While Driving: Speech Recognition Versus a Touch-Screen Keyboard

A driving simulator experiment was conducted to determine the effects of entering addresses into a navigation system during driving. Participants drove on roads of varying visual demand while entering addresses. Three address entry methods were explored: word-based speech recognition, character-based speech recognition, and typing on a touch-screen keyboard. For each method, vehicle control and...

Finger Based Techniques for Nonvisual Touchscreen Text Entry

This research proposes Finger Based Technique (FBT) for non-visual touch screen device interaction designed for blind users. Based on the proposed technique, the blind user can access virtual keys based on finger holding positions. Three different models have been proposed. They are Single Digit Finger-Digit Input (FDI), Double Digit FDI for digital text entry, and Finger-Text Input (FTI) for n...
